DIY TV Stand Options

Chances are, you are not going to buy a similar television as the kind you mother or father would have bought 40 years ago. I’m not just talking about a TV that has color. I’m talking about purchasing a television that is wider, thinner, and taller (thinner meaning less depth). Sure, it’s wonderful to have all these selections now, but it’s such a pain because you also have to deal with what type of TV stand you will purchase. A TV stand is now such a large investment that once you save up the money to buy one that holds the size of TV you want, you can only afford a 15” TV for your new TV stand. But, I can give you a few tips for getting around all these prices.
If you are like me, you can save quite a deal by getting a more modern style TV stand. I like the more modern look anyway so I prefer that style of TV stand. The surprising thing is that a TV stand made of style with the more modern look can hold more than two hundred and fifty pounds often times (don’t take my word for it though. Always check the specs on your own. I’m sometime wrong). You do need to have some mechanical skills however. It does take some skill to follow the DIY instructions but if you’ve ever put together an Ikea piece of furniture, this will be child’s play. The most difficult thing about finding a TV stand to fit your needs is that modern styles are often counter-intuitive. For example, I like the modern style because it is simpler. I’m all about the Japanese aesthetics but the big pain is trying to find how to hide all my cords in this new empty and open TV stand.
f course, if you think you’re pretty good at following instructions and things, you may want to try your hand at simply making a TV stand out of materials from Home Depot. It’s really not that hard though it seems like a daunting task. You can actually get plans online (I’ll post a comment with some if I can find some sometime). With a project template and the right tools, you should be able to do it. I haven’t made a TV stand myself but I have done a ton of DIY things with and without plans and I have yet to see failure. Make sure to get a template that looks like the parts won’t be expensive. Sometimes after starting, you realize that making it yourself can cost more than just buying it (This, I have done).
A new question is posed. What material or wood do you use? Cedar is nice since you don’t need to pay extra for a finish. It already looks great as-is. But with the right finish and stain, other woods can also look extremely elegant. Before you haphazardly make the wrong decision, take into account the setting. Are you eclectic or are you going to want you TV stand to match its surroundings. You don’t want your TV stand to stand out too much (my little tv stand pun). One tip: use wood at least 2.5 cm thick. Once again, don’t quote me on that. If you use something 2.5 cm thick and it breaks, not my fault. My biggest pet-peeve, as I mentioned before is having wires hang where you don’t want them. If you’re making your own TV stand, you have the luxury of building it tailored to your wires and things. You may not think a TV stand need be made to hide a lot of wires, but think about it. I will use my electronics as an example (and I have less than many of you). I have a DVD player, a TV, a Wii, a Playstation, an iPod hookup, and a clock. That’s quite a bit.
Anyway, I’ll try and get that link set up for the templates, but until then, I hope this has helped you. If so, take a look my TV stand domains that might help. Guide To TV Stands and TV Stand Helper.
